Self cleaning litter boxes are a hot commodity as more and more pet owners realize that scooping litter by hand is now optional. These useful household gadgets will take care of that stinky chore for you and many of them work quite well. There are a number of good choices in self cleaning litter boxes, so many in fact that it can be hard to choose the one that’s best for your pets. In this article, I’m going to take a close look at one of the most popular automatic boxes, the Cat Genie litter box. Read on for my review of the Cat Genie.

The Cat Genie self cleaning litter box is one of the more unique and unusual boxes that I have had a chance to review. It actually is as close to a human toilet as I have seen. Really – it even looks like one! This clever design not only self cleans, but it self washes too. Waste is washed away and drained from the unit. The Cat Genie then self dries, leaving a fresh and clean bed of litter for kitty’s next use.

The Cat Genie does not use litter – at least not litter in the traditional way. Instead, it uses granules that are washed and dried by the unit during the cleaning cycle. There is a special vet approved and green friendly cleaning solution that the unit uses to wash the granules. These granules never need replacing, so forget lugging heavy litter back from the store if you opt for the Cat Genie.

The only downside to the Cat Genie is the initial setup. At minimum, you need a place for the waste water to drain. This can be a wash tub in the laundry room, or an unused sink or toilet. This does limit you to where you can place the box. I have even heard of some people hiring plumbers to connect it just like a toilet, but that really isn’t necessary.

The biggest benefit of the Cat Genie is that you can kiss litter goodbye. Over time, this cost savings really adds up, making the cost itself a moot point. The odor control is superior, provided your drainage is set up properly. The cats seem to love it and adapted well to the granules over litter because they can still scrape and bury their waste.

Overall, I consider this unit to be very clever. It is well designed and does what it says it does which is keep the litter box clean and fresh with a minimum of human intervention. Once you have your unit set up, it will take care of cleaning up after kitty with no help from you.
